The Young Gods, Akimbo, Guapo & U.S. Christmas, along with Neurosis,
are among the first confirmed bands for the inaugural European
versionof Neurosis’ acclaimed Beyond The Pale festival, set to be held
atRoadburn 2009 on Saturday, April 25, the 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland.

'Neurosis'
very first show on European soil was a small festival in Germany
in1992. After a day or two of soaking in the foreign sights, sounds,
andculture, we had the honor of supporting The Young Gods
fromSwitzerland. We were young and still new to the methods of
integratingkeyboards and samples into our own style of heavy music and
that nightThe Young Gods taught us a lesson. Massive guitar riffs
blasted fromthe PA yet there was no guitarist to be seen. Their sampler
/keyboardist was a true sonic alchemist brewing insane psychedelic
heavyriffs from banks of custom created textures.
Rarely had
weexperienced technology used so organically in music. Those
soundscombined with the essential hard hitting, solid backbone of a
greatrock drummer and a charismatic vocalist blew our minds that night.'

Instantly a wallof gongs, distorted bass and screaming Fender Rhodes
built up afrightening hypnotic and pulsating beat that somehow managed
to evokeimages of Red or Lark's Tongue-era King Crimson without the
pretense,almost as if it were thrust forth with the ferocity of a Jesus
Lizardtype aggression. I was sold.'

'In
all my days I have never had a band find me in the way that
U.S.Christmas did. From deep in the mail pile of 2 months of
submissionsfor combatmusicradio.com, I picked up this demo and put it
on mystereo. Instantly the subtle dissonance and space began to crawl
aroundme as 'Lazurus' began, USX is like no other. I was instantly
intrigued,I had to know more about this mysterious band.
From deep
in the Appalachians in North Carolina comes the sound of3 guitars, 2
Theremins, and a rhythm section straight from the centerof the earth.

MOTORPSYCHO & THE OUTSKIRTS OF INFINITY CONFIRMED





Psychedelic rock icons MOTORPSYCHO have been confirmed as the headliner of the Thursday Roadburn Festival date, Thursday April 23, 2009.
Countless
bands have made up the vast musical pantheon known as 'Psychedelic
Rock', an amorphous field encompassing many stylistic variations on the
Progressive-Psychedelic axis. One of Europe's true contemporary
heavyweights in this realm is surely Norway's very own Motorpsycho.

With
their earliest roots in indie rock, metal and punk, Motorpsycho have
relentlessly and continually developed their style of Psychedelic Rock
throughout their history. Not just content to become virtuoso
improvisers and jam collaborators, they have expanded their musical
styles and explored a rich primordial stew of rock, pop, free-jazz,
west coast psychedelia.

Their
simultaneous growth as both players and songwriters has left them in a
very select group in modern rock history, a reputation well-earned
through their many classic albums & stunning live shows.

Playing
their free-form improvisational brand of psychedelic rock with
telepathic precision, Bent [bass / vocals], Snah [guitar / vocals] and
Kenneth [drums] provide a thoroughly modern take on the paths first
laid out by the likes of Can, Amon Duul II, The Allman Brothers and
Grand Funk.

THE OUTSKIRTS OF INFINTY will be headlining the Green Room. Nick Saloman [Bevis Frond] comments:

Legendary US doom metal pioneers Saint Vitus have been confirmed as the headliner for Friday's April 24th date at the 2009 Roadburn Festival.
The 14th annual Roadburn Festival will take place April 23-26, 2009
and will be held at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

Saint Vitus
is known as one of the very first doom metal bands, starting out in the
late 1970's, and have released many classic albums over the ensuing
decades. Although Saint Vitus
has been on hold for several years now, they will be reforming as the
classic 'Born Too Late' line-up (Dave Chandler, Scott "Wino" Weinrich,
Mark Adams, Armando Acosta) headlining Friday night at Roadburn 2009.

Over the last two decades, Saint Vitus
has become revered as one of the main architects of the modern doom
scene, encompassing all that doom metal is all about: emotion, melody
and epic songs stacked with enough behemoth riffs to light a week long
bonfire. Every note the band has ever put to tape is a benchmark by
which all other doom records have been judged. Saint Vitus classic
phrase 'Born to Late' has become the war cry for generations of
doom-aficionados.

Wino comments: "We
will be playing a lot of everybody’s favorite stuff. Also, my project
band Wino will be playing as well, playing tracks from my solo record
'Punctuated Equilibrium' and some surprises too!" Wino's solo band is set for Roadburn 2009's additional Afterburner event, scheduled for Sunday, April 26, alongside Solace, Dyse and Bill Steer's Firebird amongst others.

In other developments, Roadburn is also pleased to report that UK doom legends Cathedral will play the Friday Roadburn date. Purveyors of psychedelic doom since 1991, Cathedral have been amazing audiences
with
impassioned live performances thanks to the monstrous grooves
and monolithic riffs from tracks like "Hopkins (The Witchfinder
General)" and "Utopian Blaster."






Also scheduled to appear on the Friday are both Scott Kelly & Steve Von Till from Neurosis, Mono (Japan), Bohren und der Club of Gore, Negura Bunget, Dragontears, The Winchester Club, Omega Massif, Colour Haze & The Outskirts of Infinity amongst others.

Roadburn is also pleased to report that AMON DÜÜL II,
one of the most influential bands in the canon of Kosmische Musik
pioneers has been confirmed for the Thurday Roadburn Festival date,
Thursday, April 23, alongside Motorpsycho.

WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM will be headlining the Green Room on Thursday, April 23.

almost absurd that such a funereal band as Wolves In The Throne Room
can provoke such joy in so many people; a sense of palpably present.
This is no apocalyptic boner-fest either -the delicacy and balance, the
thought and care of the songs shine through clearly, only emphasized by
the added power of Will Lindsay (of Portland doomsters Middian) on
bass. Inseparable from the loss and anger so characteristic of Wolves'
world-view are purpose and longing and love too. There is such a thing

Japanse doomsters CHURCH OF MISERY will aslo return to the Roadburn stage on Thursday, April 23.


No
frills, straight out DOOM. Japan's serial-killer-obsessed seekers of
the almighty riff, Church of Misery remian one of the most original
sounding doom acts out today.

We're very pleased to report as well that Holland's very own THE DEVIL'S BLOOD will return to the Roadburn stage, after their scorching debut appearance (their first ever live perfomance) at Roadburn 2008.

THE DEVIL'S BLOOD
are at this point perhaps the most unique and doubtlessly the best band
to perform Occult Psychedelic Rock. Sharing similarities with no other
contemporary band and simply dazzling the listener with a combination
of extremely melodic and darkly subversive music in the vein of Roky
Erickson, Coven, Black Widow and Jefferson Airplane, the Cult have thus
far blasted away any and all competition.

With a definite
desire to stay for all intents and purposes an underground group
thecult choose not to align themselves with the bigger labels, who are
at this point signing all bands that create occult rock they can find,
but to rather to work closely with their two smaller labels in order to
achieve a maximum effect without the loss of the integrity that they
socherish. This has so far resulted in a 7' (The Graveyard Shuffle,Van Records) and a CD/LP (Come, Reap,Van
Records& Profound Lore Records). Both of these releases have been
greeted with unprecedented enthusiasm by fan and critic alike.
As the spiritual side of The Devil's Blood
has always been, at least, equally important as the musical side, the
cultists have distinguished themselves through their live rituals which
are very austere and ceremonial.

The Devil's Blood,never
interested in cheap thrills and short term effect, create an atmosphere

Roadburn Expands!


Some exciting new updates: Roadburn is expanding! We are going to use an extra building for the 2009 festival, called the V39.
It is opposite the main entrance from the 013. The building is going to
be used for all merchandise sales during the festival (main floor), press
affairs (first floor), as well as have an outside smoking area (the garden).

In addition, we're going to put up two special events at our V39 stage (the basement). There's gonna be a dark ambient / horror
electronics night with Aderlating, the drone / horror
soundtrack / noise sibling outfit to Gnaw Their Tongues, and Burial Hex on Thursday, April 23. We have invited Croatian freakrock
outfit Seven That Spells to play a brain-melting, mind-crushing, 3 set, two hour performance, encompassing the entire 6 years of
the band's existence and different psychedelic styles on Friday, April 24.


Roadburn's V39 will be open from Thursday,
April 23 to Saturday, April 25, from 12 pm til 12 am.



Burial Hex is a chthonic composition cycle, founded by Clay Ruby, in
preparation for thee final mysteries in the coming twilight of this Kali
Yuga...

Branching out from his ambient compositions for the Black Metal
outfit Wormsblood, Ruby formed Burial Hex in 2004 with the release 'Curses of the Earth' on Skullfucking Tapes [Label changed name to Cult
Cassettes]. This tape was soon followed by the self titled LP on SNSE,
since then there have been nearly 30 more releases on every imaginable
format.

The arch of Burial Hex has traveled a far distance in the last
five years, creating everything from lifeless ambient to epic cosmic
voyages, from subtle modern keyboard music to pounding industrial noise, from dark motorik electro to necro power electronics, sometimes shifting between several styles within a single composition.

The
tension in this music is palpable, and Burial Hex has constructed a
very special extended performance and mystery transmission for Roadburn
2009.


Draining
all the blood from your worthless body with nausea-inducing 20 khz
drones fistfucking distorted tapehiss raped soundscapes while the
lowest and vilest of demons provide a diabolical orchestration to
celebrate the death of everything. Gnaw Their Tongues present: Aderlating - drone/noise/horrorsoundtrack - the ideal
solution if you want to be bludgeoned into a catatonic state!





Seven That Spells,
hailing from Croatia, started out as a real guitar-oriented acid rock
band with their first release. The band has been quite productive (6
records since
2003) and is lately influenced by (and have collaborated with) Acid
Mothers Temple, while still keeping their own unique sound and feeling
intact.

Seven That Spells generally come up with really
interesting and heavy rock riffs and mix in some over the top freak
outs as well. A great and unique psychedelic rock band --Scott Heller, Aural Innovations.

In other Roadburn related news, Rose Kemp has been confirmed for the Thursday Roadburn festival date, Thursday, April 23.



Rose has recorded a stunning album, her incredible voice and distinctly
doomy leanings take centre stage on this incredible record, called
'Unholy Majesty' where her work with Atavist and with mother Maddy
Prior collides in a dark and decadent tapestry of doomed prog, folk and
rock.

Het was blijkbaar op 45 minuten uitverkocht. Ik heb geen ticketje te pakken gekregen :(

Asva heeft heel hun tour gecancelled. Ze zijn nog aan het zoeken naar een vervanger.

Met mijn manke poot was het verre van een gemakkelijke editie voor mij maar ik ben heel tevreden dat ik ben geweest.
De herverdeling van de ruimte was optimaal. De verdringing in de centrale gangen was zo goed als volledig weggewerkt en de eet-stands hadden veel betere fret dan andere jaren.
Het rookverbod suckt gewoonweg! De merchandise aan de overkant was toch iets vreemd maar dat terrasje erachter was met het weer van donderdag en vrijdag gewoonweg zalig.
Muzikaal gezien lag volgens mij de sterkte deze keer in het sferische.
Schitterende shows gezien van: Mono,US Christmas, Earth, Bohren und der club of gore,neurosis, grails en Wolves in the throneroom. (waarbij de volgorde van opsomming een aanduiding is van persoonlijk best bevallen naar heel goed bevallen) Zeer degelijk waren dan weer: Om, Zeni Geva, Nadja, Dragon Tears en ZU. Cathedral was eerst een beetje pathetisch lachwekkend maar uiteindelijk bleek het een degelijk potje retro zelfrelativering met de beste Ozzy Osbourne sinds Ozzy Osbourne.
Steve von till begon heel sterk met een kippenvel versie van breathe maar de magie sloop gaandeweg een beetje uit het optreden.
Spijtig genoeg heeft mijn situatie ervoor gezorgd dat ik niet tot het einde ben gebleven en zo heb ik Church of misery, Saviours en tribes of neurot aan mij voorbij laten gaan.
Devils Blood is totaal niet aan mij besteed, te archetypische hardrock.
The young gods hebben duidelijk geluidsupdate 2.0 , 3.0 en 4.0 gemist oftewel kaal vlak geluid dat echt ondermaats is vergeleken met velen anderen.
St Vitus was de verschrikking dit jaar.
Wat een geriatrisch gegeven was me dat. Drummer met Alzheimer die vergeten was hoe hij moest drummen? Als er binnenkort ergens geluid en beeld te zien is moeten jullie zelf maar beoordelen maar ik kon het niet aanhoren en ben na twee en een half nummer echt gevlucht.

kortom content dat ik me niet heb laten nekken door mijn been en toch ben geweest.

Ik vond Mono en Church Of Misery de 2 beste optredens die ik deze keer gezien heb. Earth, Nadja, WITTR, The Winchester Club en Burial Hex waren ook genieten.
Bij Nadja zit ik nog wel altijd met de vraag hoeveel covers ze nu gespeeld hebben. Alleen The Sun Always Shine on TV heb ik herkend.

Minsk heb ik een half optreden gehoord, en muzikaal was dat ok, maar spijtig genoeg was er weer 0,0 plaats over in die zaal. Dat heb je natuurlijk als je eerst een beetje van Aderlating wilt zien ...

Bohren blijft op zich heel goede muziek, maar vond ik wat misstaan in de grote zaal. Geef ze mij dan maar weer in de kleine zaal of zoals vorig jaar september in de AB club.

Ik heb twee nummers van Minsk van buiten aan de deur gehoord en dat leek niet zo geweldig maar ja was ook niet ideaal.
Veel kans dat de vinyl daarvan op hypertension records gaat komen.
Ik denk trouwens dat Mono zo een goede beurt heeft gemaakt dat zich dat wel eens naar een aanzienlijke uitbreiding qua publiek zou kunnen vertalen. Zitten precies echt wel in een goede vibe.

28 november begint de voorverkoop en die is beperkt tot 2 kaarten per persoon.

De line up van 2010 is toch niet echt aan mij besteed, te veel gaten.

Ik vrees dat er voor mij heel veel overlappingen gaan zijn ...

Och ja, eerst maar eens zien of ik morgen aan een ticketje geraak.

Evoken en veel van die Tom Warrior line up interesseert mij de woef zijn bollocks

Begrijpbaar, die dag zijn de genres niet zo divers als andere jaren.
Ik zit die dag met het probleem dat ik veel van zijn line-up wil zien en ook 3 van de 5 groepen in het Midi theater.
